The Astra 200 Multi-function Spirometer

The Astra 200 Multi-function Spirometer

The Astra 200 Multi-function Spirometer is a highly versatile hand-held spirometer that provides measurements of Simple Spirometry, Flow Volume Loops, Maximum Voluntary Ventilation and Bronchial Challenge.

The instrument can be used in three ways:
  • Morgan Science FoundationTests can be completed and printed independent of any computer connection. A variety of predicted sets are available.
  • As a pocked-sized portable device, tests stored in the Astra 200 Multi-function Spirometer memory can be later downloaded into ComPAS Freedom™ software.
  • When directly connected via RS232 or USB to a PC, tests can be completed and stored on-line using ComPAS Freedom™ software.

Applications

The Astra 200 Multi-function Spirometer is perfectly suited to Office Spirometry, Industrial Screening and Bedside Evaluations. It is also an ideal 'partner' to complement a Morgan pulmonary function laboratory network. Since the Astra 200 Multi-function Spirometer runs with ComPAS Freedom™ software, it is a perfect 'starting-point' for respiratory testing. New devices can later be added to ComPAS Freedom™ to provide capability for lung volume and diffusion testing.

How it works

The Astra 200 Multi-function Spirometer uses a turbine with a cylindrical and transparent body, inside which two helicoidal conveyors (fan blades - located symmetrically at each extremity) hold a very light-weight rotor. The rotor axis rotates on jewel bearings to minimize friction. Axial turbine flowmeters are devices capable of providing accurate gas volumetric flow measurement.

The hand-held housing of the turbine contains an optoelectronic reader. This is a transducer containing infrared photo diodes (emitter and receiver). As air passes through the helicoidal conveyors (fan blades) it takes a spiral motion which causes rotation of the turbine rotor. As the rotor spins, the infrared light beamed by the diodes is interrupted with each passage of the blade. Every complete revolution of the rotor represents a known volume of air flowing through the turbine. For each single interruption, an impulse is transmitted to a microprocessor which counts revolutions and consequently measures air flow and volume.

High quality spirometry testing that is as easy as:

  1. ComPAS Screen ImagesA simple [Spacebar] begins all tests.
  2. When the flow volume maneuver is completed, the software checks the loop against the ATS recommended performance criteria. If the loop meets these test standards, a hollow check mark confirms the effort.
  3. Once three flow volume loops have been completed and ATS reproducibility criteria is satisfied then the hollow checks become solid and you are assured of excellence in testing standards.

ComPAS Freedom™ is a suite of software that displays clear meaningful information while gently directing the technician towards excellence.
